Abia Varsity Commences Screening Of First-Class Graduates For Automatic Employment Opportunities

The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has commenced the screening of First-Class graduates as part of the implementation of the automatic employment directive earlier announced by Governor Alex Otti.

The decision, which was unveiled during the university’s combined 30th to 32nd convocation ceremonies held on March 27, includes plans to retain First-Class graduates from the three graduating sets as Graduate Assistants within the institution.

According to Ireporter Online, the screening exercise began last Wednesday for eligible graduates who have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), paving the way for the issuance of official employment letters.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor of ABSU, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, expressed satisfaction with the academic excellence recorded by the graduating students, describing their performance as commendable and worthy of institutional support.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. (Mrs.) Roseline Ndimele, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to rewarding hard work and sustaining academic excellence.

Prof. Okeudo further explained that only graduates who have completed their NYSC programme are currently eligible to present their documents for screening, while those still serving or awaiting service are expected to participate upon completion.

In a related development, the Registrar of the university, Dr. Acho Elendu, confirmed that the exercise aligns with directives from the Governor and Visitor to the institution. He urged all candidates to strictly follow the stipulated guidelines to avoid errors during the process.

He noted that approval had been granted for the immediate commencement of the retention process for all First-Class graduates across the three convocation sets, describing the initiative as a fulfillment of the Governor’s commitment to academic excellence.

The Governor had also announced that the policy would extend to the best graduating students in various departments with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.25, alongside postgraduate scholarship opportunities up to doctoral level in any public university of their choice, subject to acceptance of the teaching appointment.

It was gathered that about 38 First-Class graduates from different departments took part in the ongoing screening exercise and are expected to receive their employment letters soon as the university moves to fully implement the directive.
