OAUSTECH Student Babatunde Emerges New NANS President
According to Ireporter Online, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Akinteye Babatunde of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology as its new national president following a keenly contested election held during the 2026 national convention in Abuja.
The convention, which took place at the Old Parade Ground, witnessed the participation of more than 300 delegates drawn from student union bodies across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Babatunde, a former NANS Senate President, emerged victorious in a tightly contested race involving five aspirants from various universities, including Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Federal University of Technology Akure, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
The election was conducted under tight security, with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and operatives of the Department of State Services deployed to ensure order and safety throughout the process. Despite the high-stakes nature of the contest, the exercise reportedly proceeded peacefully without any recorded disruption.
Following his declaration as winner, Babatunde expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in his leadership, pledging to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration while prioritising unity among Nigerian students. He also noted that the election was one of the most peaceful in the history of the association, adding that all contestants accepted the outcome in good faith.
The outgoing president, Olushola Oladoja, described the electoral process as a defining moment of his tenure, expressing optimism that Babatunde would provide effective leadership for the association moving forward.
The Independent Convention Planning Committee confirmed that over 300 accredited delegates participated in the exercise, which produced Babatunde as the new national leader of NANS.
