Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has explained why he initiated legal action against his former political associate, Kenneth Okonkwo, insisting that the move was not intended to silence criticism or restrict freedom of expression.

According to Ireporter Online, Obi made the clarification during an interview with Chude Jideonwo, where he stated that the lawsuit was aimed at ensuring that public claims made against individuals are supported with evidence.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) explained that when someone alleges having sensitive or damaging information about another person, such claims should be properly presented, investigated, and proven rather than circulated as unverified statements capable of affecting a person’s reputation.

Obi stressed that public figures must take responsibility for their words, particularly when their comments involve allegations that could harm the image and integrity of another individual.

He disclosed that his decision to sue Okonkwo followed remarks by the former spokesperson, who allegedly stated that he possessed hidden information about Obi that would be revealed if he was challenged or taken to court.

Obi said the legal action was necessary to compel the claims to be addressed through proper channels, adding that anyone who makes serious allegations against another person should either provide evidence or retract such statements.

He stated, “Kenneth Okonkwo said he has so many hidden things about me, that if he’s provoked or sued, he will bring them out, and that is why I am suing him, to bring those things out.”

The former governor maintained that the court process was not about preventing criticism but about ensuring accountability and demanding proof for claims made in the public space.
