How Alex Onyia Is Reshaping Nigerian Education With Advocacy, Training And STEM Olympiads

Amid growing concerns over the challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector, education technology entrepreneur and Educare founder, Alex Onyia, is gaining recognition for his sustained efforts to improve learning outcomes through innovation, advocacy and strategic interventions.

According to Ireporter Online, Onyia has continued to champion initiatives aimed at addressing critical issues affecting education, including access to quality learning, accountability, academic integrity and global competitiveness. His work spans education technology, STEM development, policy advocacy and direct support for students and teachers across the country.

Through Educare, a K-12 education technology platform, Onyia has introduced digital solutions designed to modernise school administration and improve teaching and learning. The platform currently serves more than one million students and over 300,000 parents across Africa, offering services such as digital learning tools, school management systems and performance analytics to enhance educational outcomes.

In a bid to strengthen science and technology education, Onyia also pursued international collaborations in 2025 by engaging education partners in Switzerland and Eindhoven to develop a comprehensive STEM curriculum for Nigerian pupils from primary to secondary school. The proposed programme incorporates early computing education, block programming and advanced digital skills aimed at preparing young learners for future opportunities.

His commitment to nurturing academic excellence has also seen him establish and finance the South East Maths and Science Olympiad, an initiative designed to identify gifted students, encourage healthy academic competition and showcase exceptional talents from the region.

Beyond institutional programmes, Onyia has personally sponsored and mentored several outstanding students and teachers, helping them gain access to quality education, mentorship and international exposure. Among the beneficiaries are students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have gone on to achieve remarkable academic success.

The education advocate has equally maintained a strong stance against examination malpractice, extortion and unethical practices within schools, repeatedly describing such acts as serious threats to national development and merit-based education.

His influence became more evident during the controversy surrounding the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results. Following widespread concerns over the unusually poor performance recorded by candidates, Onyia presented data from various schools highlighting inconsistencies between expected and published results. Rather than attributing the outcome to mass failure, he called for a comprehensive technical review of the examination process. His intervention eventually led to an invitation by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to participate in a high-level review panel, a move that contributed to increased scrutiny, transparency and corrective measures for affected candidates.

In his latest contribution to advancing Nigerian education, Onyia fully sponsored a delegation of students and teachers to represent the country at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy.

He funded the participation of three students and two teachers, who emerged as winners of the 2026 South East Maths Olympiad, covering all travel and competition expenses. The Nigerian team competed alongside participants from 154 countries at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, with students including Egejurum Onyedikachi and Victor Onwubiko representing the nation. The outcome of the competition is expected to be announced around July 7.

Observers say Onyia’s growing investments in technology-driven education, talent development and policy advocacy continue to position him as one of the leading voices driving meaningful change in Nigeria’s education sector.
