Deal Off: Chelsea Brand Monaco “Unprofessional” After Camara Talks Collapse

Chelsea have described Monaco’s conduct as “unprofessional” after a proposed deadline-day transfer for Senegal international Lamine Camara collapsed despite the midfielder completing a medical in France.

The 22-year-old was expected to move to Stamford Bridge for a reported £47.1 million, but Monaco informed Chelsea in writing shortly after the 23:00 BST deadline that they would not proceed with the transfer.

Chelsea had identified Camara as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, whose £125 million move to Manchester City had already been approved.

The Premier League club had previously made two unsuccessful bids for Camara before Monaco appeared ready to negotiate over the midfielder. Chelsea subsequently believed an agreement had been reached after the French club lowered its valuation amid uncertainty surrounding Folarin Balogun’s proposed transfer to Everton.

Camara then underwent his medical in France on Tuesday evening, further increasing Chelsea’s confidence that the deal would be completed.

However, Monaco later informed the London club that they would not sanction the transfer. Chelsea sources subsequently described the situation as “unprofessional”, while Monaco reportedly did not provide an explanation for the late change of position.

Reports suggest Monaco’s decision may have been linked to Balogun’s proposed move to Everton. The Ligue 1 club had been keen to sell the United States striker during the summer and appeared to view his departure as an important part of their plans.

Balogun’s potential transfer to Everton had initially appeared uncertain, prompting Monaco to reduce their valuation of Camara and allowing negotiations with Chelsea to progress.

Camara had featured in Monaco’s 2-0 victory over Marseille on Sunday, while Balogun was left out of the squad.

As Everton’s pursuit of Balogun appeared to gather momentum, Monaco seemingly reconsidered allowing Camara to leave, bringing the midfielder’s proposed move to Chelsea to a dramatic end.

The collapse leaves Chelsea without the player they had targeted to replace Fernandez, who has completed his move to Manchester City.

Camara, who joined Monaco from Metz in 2024, will now remain with the French club following the late breakdown of his proposed transfer to Stamford Bridge.
