Ekpa, along with four others, was detained by Finnish authorities on charges related to public incitement with terrorist intent in Nigeria. The Finnish District Court in Lahti confirmed the arrests, citing his role in spreading separatist propaganda linked to IPOB through social media. The charges date back to August 2021. Additionally, there have been prior investigations into Ekpa for alleged financial crimes, including fundraising through questionable methods.

Despite the widespread media attention surrounding the arrest, there has been silence from the Nigerian presidency on the matter.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, explained that the National Security Adviser (NSA) or the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) should be the ones to address the issue officially. Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, further stated that he has not yet received instructions from the President and cannot comment on the situation prematurely.

He added that President Tinubu, who is currently abroad on official duties, has not been fully briefed about the matter, which is crucial before issuing any public response. Bwala emphasized that it is customary for the Nigerian embassy in Finland to brief the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which would then update the President before any position is taken.

Bwala stated: “As a spokesperson, my duty is to reflect the position of my principal. It would be irresponsible for me to make a statement before receiving proper guidance on the matter.” He also mentioned that in a nation governed by the rule of law, such matters would typically be handled by the Attorney-General in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In conclusion, Bwala reiterated that it is too early to provide a presidential opinion on the issue.
