Why Growing a Beard Might Make You Seem Less Trustworthy, New Study Reveals

Recent study conducted by McMaster University has brought new insights into how facial hair affects perceptions of trustworthiness. The research indicates that men with beards are often seen as less trustworthy compared to their clean-shaven counterparts. In fact, men without facial hair were rated up to three times more trustworthy.
The Impact of Facial Hair on Trustworthiness
According to the study, only 13% of participants considered men with facial hair to be trustworthy. The study highlights a significant disparity in how bearded men are perceived. This could have implications for men in roles where trustworthiness is crucial, such as in leadership or professional settings.
Facial Hair and Attractiveness
The study also explored how facial hair affects attractiveness. It found that men with less facial hair were rated as more attractive by women. Interestingly, while some women might view the ability to grow a beard as a sign of physical maturity, they generally prefer men with less facial hair for both short-term and long-term relationships. Full beards, in particular, were associated with higher levels of aggression and dominance, which could be unappealing to many.
Facial Hair and Aggression
The researchers linked facial hair to higher testosterone levels, which are associated with aggression. This connection suggests that beards might give off an impression of aggression rather than trustworthiness. In their experiments, participants played economic games where opponents’ faces were digitally altered to appear more or less aggressive. Results showed that men with narrower faces, and thus less aggressive appearances, were more likely to be trusted over those with wider faces.
Implications and Future Research
While the sample size for the study was relatively small—consisting of only 21 university students—the findings have notable implications. Men aiming to enhance their trustworthiness, especially in professional or leadership roles, might consider maintaining a clean-shaven appearance.
This study is pioneering in directly evaluating how facial hair affects initial judgments of trustworthiness. As research in this area progresses, it may provide further clarity on the complex ways in which our appearance influences social perceptions.
