The 88-year-old pontiff was greeted with applause as he was wheeled through St. Peter’s Square in his wheelchair during a mass dedicated to the sick and healthcare workers.

“Good Sunday to everyone. Thank you very much,” he addressed the crowd following the service. Despite being connected to nasal breathing tubes, his voice was fragile yet clearer than it had been upon leaving Gemelli Hospital on March 23. His last public engagement before this had been on February 14.

Although Francis is theoretically on a two-month recovery period following this health scare, with directions to rest and avoid public engagements and crowds, he took the opportunity to bless the faithful gathered in the sunny square. This gesture serves as a hopeful sign for his health as the global Christian community prepares to celebrate Easter in two weeks.

The Pope’s desire to connect with his followers, however, goes against the advice of his medical team, who have recommended avoiding gatherings to minimize the risk of infection. A Vatican source, speaking anonymously, indicated, “He’s clearly doing better, and he wants to convey that.” The source added that while he isn’t yet fit to deliver a message, he is well enough to make this appearance.

According to his doctors, he faced life-threatening complications during his hospital stay, which marked the longest and most challenging period of his 12-year papacy. His health issues have sparked speculation about whether he might consider resigning, following the precedent set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who stepped down in 2013 due to health challenges.

Earlier in the day, the Pope received the sacrament in St. Peter’s Cathedral, as confirmed by a statement from the Vatican. In keeping with recent weeks, he did not read the customary Angelus prayer aloud; instead, it was published in written form.

In his message, Pope Francis expressed gratitude for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers, highlighting their dedication under often challenging conditions. “Their mission is not easy and must be supported and respected,” he stated.

The Pope also offered prayers for peace in regions afflicted by conflict, including Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and earthquake-stricken areas of Myanmar and Haiti, as well as for the Middle East, particularly Gaza, where recent actions have caused significant suffering. He urged for a cessation of hostilities and a re-engagement in dialogue.

Francis, who had a lung removed as a young man, has faced various health challenges in recent years. While receiving continuous care from healthcare professionals at the Vatican, he has not received visitors beyond his close associates since leaving the hospital. However, he has resumed his papal duties, including reviewing and signing documents. His ability to participate in the religious events leading up to Easter, which is a pivotal time in the Christian calendar, remains to be seen.
