Half Of My Father’s Legacy” — Lady Explains Why She’ll Keep Her Surname After Marriage
According to Ireporter Online, a Nigerian lady has generated widespread reactions on social media after disclosing her intention to retain her father’s surname even after marriage. The lady explained that her decision is rooted in the fact that her family has no male child, adding that she deeply values her father’s legacy and wishes to preserve his name.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she noted that while she may consider hyphenating her father’s surname with her husband’s, she and her sisters are united in the decision to continue bearing their father’s name. She emphasized that the move is a way of honouring her father and sustaining his legacy, expressing hope that her future husband would respect her choice.
“I want to maintain my father’s surname. We are all girls in my family. I just want to keep it in remembrance that there’s a man who is so great,” she said, while praising her father’s character and contributions to the family.
She also added that she is aware of potential marital disagreements that can arise from surname decisions but believes her choice is meaningful and intentional.
The development has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many users taking to the comment section to express differing opinions on the matter. While some supported her stance on legacy preservation, others argued that family lineage should be continued through alternative means, including marriage traditions and children bearing the husband’s name.
