EFCC Arrests 19 Suspected Internet Fraudsters In Edo State

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of 19 individuals suspected of engaging in internet-related fraud in Benin City, Edo State.

In a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the anti-graft agency disclosed that the arrests were carried out on Saturday, April 12, 2025, by operatives from the Benin Zonal Directorate. The EFCC reported that the intelligence gathered indicated the individuals were involved in schemes designed to defraud unsuspecting victims through illicit internet activities.

During the coordinated operation, several items were recovered from the suspects, including five high-end vehicles and multiple smartphones.

The EFCC stated:

“Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Saturday, April 12, 2025, arrested 19 suspected internet fraudsters at different locations within Benin City, Edo State.

The suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence that linked them to fraudulent internet activities.

Items recovered from them included five exotic cars and smartphones.”

The agency further assured the public that all suspects will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

This development is part of the EFCC’s continued nationwide effort to combat cybercrime, popularly known in Nigeria as “yahoo-yahoo.”
