Rivers Chief Magistrate Resigns Citing Concerns Over Governance Structure
Chief Magistrate Ejike King George has formally resigned from his position within the Rivers State Judiciary, citing concerns over the prevailing political climate in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State and submitted through the Secretary of the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission, Magistrate George described his resignation as a “difficult and regrettable” decision, prompted by unease over the recent appointment of what he termed a “quasi-military administration” to govern the state….READ MORE…
He expressed that the current system of governance is not only unfamiliar but also fundamentally misaligned with the core principles and values of the legal profession. According to George, such a structure undermines the democratic ideals that legal practitioners and judicial officers are sworn to uphold.
Reflecting on his career, George noted that he has served 16 of his 22 years in legal practice as a magistrate during periods of democratic governance. He emphasized that continuing in his role under the present circumstances would be tantamount to silent endorsement of a governance style he considers incompatible with the rule of law.
He concluded by expressing his gratitude to the Chief Judge for the opportunity to serve, reaffirming his respect for the judiciary while formally announcing his voluntary exit.
