PDP Governors Disassociate From Atiku-Led Opposition Coalition

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has publicly distanced itself from the recently announced opposition coalition spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Led by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the Forum emphasized that it has no intention of participating in any political alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. During the gathering, the Forum further fueled internal party tensions by endorsing Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, as the Acting National Secretary, amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the position’s legitimacy.

The opposition coalition, which was unveiled by Atiku Abubakar, is believed to include prominent political figures such as Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai. Atiku stated that the coalition’s primary objective is to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

El-Rufai’s recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came amid his criticism of the APC’s alleged erosion of internal democracy since President Tinubu took office.

Adewale Adebayo, the SDP’s former presidential candidate, also confirmed that talks are ongoing with Atiku, Obi, and other influential politicians regarding their potential alignment with the SDP. He suggested that if they embrace the party’s values and principles, they stand a strong chance of defeating President Tinubu and the ruling APC.

Meanwhile, Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), claimed that El-Rufai may be positioning himself as Atiku’s proxy within the SDP, in the event the PDP withholds its 2027 presidential ticket from Atiku.
