PDP Criticizes Edo Government As Presidency Condemns Early 2027 Campaign Billboards For Tinubu
The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has openly criticized the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo following the Presidency’s condemnation of unauthorized campaign billboards promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election.
In a statement titled “Presidency Disclaims 2027 Campaign Billboards Nationwide”, the Federal Government expressed concern over the proliferation of premature political advertisements across the country and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding electoral laws and democratic norms….READ MORE…
The PDP asserted that this development represents a major blow to Governor Okpebholo’s perceived attempts to curry favor with President Tinubu through what the party described as “reckless and unlawful political schemes.”
In a separate statement issued on Monday, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, strongly criticized Governor Okpebholo for allegedly initiating Tinubu’s presidential campaign ahead of the legally permitted timeframe.
Titled “Okpebholo’s Launch of 2027 Presidential Campaigns for Tinubu in Edo: An Insult, an Affront to the Constitution,” the PDP’s statement praised the Presidency’s stance, stating it validates the opposition party’s concerns and highlights what it sees as deceptive and unlawful tactics by the Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The reaction from the Presidency confirms our position and exposes the APC’s blatant disregard for the country’s electoral regulations,” the statement said. “Their actions have not only disrespected the people of Edo but have now drawn criticism from the very administration they sought to impress.”
The PDP further cited Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which states:
“The period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.”
The opposition party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defending constitutional order and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic processes from what it called the APC’s desperate and illegal manipulations.
