Messi Chases Ronaldo’s World Cup Legacy In Epic Final Showdown
Lionel Messi is on the verge of achieving a rare football milestone previously held only by Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário as Argentina prepare to face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, July 19.
According to Ireporter Online, the Argentina captain will lead the defending champions into the highly anticipated final with hopes of securing back-to-back World Cup triumphs after their victory in Qatar in 2022.
A win for Argentina would see Messi claim his second FIFA World Cup title and join Ronaldo Nazário as the only footballers in history to have won multiple World Cup trophies alongside at least two Ballon d’Or awards.
Ronaldo remains the only player to have accomplished the feat, having lifted the World Cup with Brazil in 1994 and 2002 while also securing the Ballon d’Or awards in 1997 and 2002.
Messi, who currently holds the record for the most Ballon d’Or victories with eight awards, has already cemented his place among football’s greatest players. However, the Argentine superstar has won the World Cup only once, following his country’s historic triumph in Qatar four years ago.
The upcoming final presents the 39-year-old forward with another opportunity to strengthen his legendary status and add a new chapter to one of the most decorated careers in football history.
The achievement has remained out of reach for several iconic players across different generations. German greats Franz Beckenbauer and Lothar Matthäus both lifted the World Cup but never managed to win the tournament twice as players.
Beckenbauer won the trophy with West Germany in 1974 before later achieving another triumph as a coach in 1990. Meanwhile, Brazilian legends Pelé and Garrincha secured multiple World Cup titles but were unable to compete for the Ballon d’Or during their playing careers because the award was previously restricted to European footballers until 1995.
The expansion of the Ballon d’Or eligibility rules allowed players from across the globe to compete for the prestigious individual honour, paving the way for stars such as Ronaldo Nazário and later Messi to create historic legacies in world football.
