Yvonne Jegede Reveals Why Celebrities Avoid Speaking On National Issues
Nollywood actress and producer Yvonne Jegede has revealed that the backlash faced by public figures who speak on national issues is a major reason many celebrities prefer to remain silent during challenging periods.
According to Ireporter Online, the actress shared her concerns on social media, stating that attempts by celebrities to highlight societal problems are often met with criticism rather than meaningful discussions.
Jegede explained that her decision to speak on issues affecting the country has frequently attracted negative reactions, making her understand why many influential personalities choose not to comment during times of crisis.
“The more I speak about the unusual things I see happening in my country, the more people attack me. I now understand why people stay silent in moments of crisis,” she stated.
The actress noted that she has always believed in standing up when people face difficulties and injustice, adding that she finds it difficult to ignore the struggles of others. However, she admitted that recent experiences have made her question the impact of speaking out.
Jegede further expressed disappointment over what she described as widespread intolerance and division among Nigerians, arguing that efforts to advocate for change are often met with unnecessary hostility.
She also criticised aspects of the country’s tax system, questioning why citizens who pay taxes are still expected to take on responsibilities that should primarily be handled by the government.
The actress argued that many Nigerians work hard, fulfil their tax obligations, yet continue to provide basic support that should come from public institutions.
Expressing her frustration over the current situation in the country, Jegede disclosed that ongoing challenges have affected her emotional wellbeing, saying the state of affairs has pushed her mental health to its limit.
Her comments have since generated discussions among Nigerians, with many debating the role of celebrities in speaking up on social and national matters.
