Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to gather in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Sunday and Monday to discuss the party’s future, amid rising calls for a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, internal divisions and conflicting interests among key stakeholders have hindered significant progress in coalition discussions, according to party sources.

One of the key objectives of the meeting will be to deliberate on the party’s approach to a potential coalition with other opposition groups. Despite a strong desire to unite against the APC, internal disagreements have slowed any tangible steps toward this goal.

In addition to coalition talks, the governors will also address their ongoing legal battle with the federal government. The PDP governors are challenging the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. As vice chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Fubara is at the heart of a political crisis in the state, raising concerns within the party about federal interference and its impact on party unity.

Another critical matter on the agenda is the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the dispute over the position of national secretary. The governors are expected to review the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment in the ongoing battle between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye for the role.

A senior party source indicated that the outcome of this decision will play a pivotal role in shaping the PDP’s position as a formidable opposition force or risk being overtaken by smaller parties. The source also mentioned that over 75% of PDP members are growing disillusioned with the party’s current leadership and are preparing to leave.

“The governors must act decisively to either lead the party into a robust coalition or rebuild it internally and invite others to join. They need to prove their sincerity to party members,” the source said.

The source, who requested anonymity, expressed concerns that unless significant changes are made, the coalition efforts may falter, as the majority of PDP members are increasingly disengaged from the party. “The PDP is in dire straits, and unless drastic action is taken, the party may become irrelevant in the opposition coalition,” the source added.

The upcoming meeting in Ibadan is seen as a critical juncture for the PDP to chart a path forward, either by uniting with other opposition forces or by strengthening its internal structure.
