Military Foils ISWAP Attack, Two Soldiers Wounded

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military Forward Operating Base in Gajigana, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to Ireporter Online, the attack occurred on Saturday evening when a large number of suspected terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the military facility. However, troops of the 212 Battalion responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a heavy gun battle that forced them to withdraw from the area.

Security sources disclosed that the attackers approached the base at about 7:20 p.m., using motorcycles, gun trucks and foot movements as part of the offensive strategy. The planned assault was reportedly detected early by troops, who immediately launched a strong counter-attack to prevent the terrorists from reaching the base.

The military personnel reportedly overwhelmed the attackers with superior firepower, causing them to retreat in disarray. A reinforcement team led by the Commanding Officer of the 212 Battalion later arrived at the location to strengthen the troops’ position and ensure the area remained secured.

The failed operation reportedly resulted in significant casualties for the ISWAP fighters, with several terrorists neutralised during the confrontation. Sources added that some of the attackers escaped while carrying away the bodies of their fallen comrades.

Despite successfully thwarting the attack, two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter. The injured personnel received immediate medical attention before being evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for further treatment.

Military sources also confirmed that some equipment sustained minor damage during the exchange of fire. The body of a gun truck and four tyres were reportedly affected by fragments from a rocket-propelled grenade fired by the attackers.

The Nigerian Army has continued to intensify counter-terrorism operations across the North-East, with troops maintaining efforts to prevent terrorist groups from carrying out attacks and protect communities in the region.
