Peter Obi Responds After Gov. Alia Blocks His Planned Visit To IDP Camps

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed his dismay following the Benue State Government’s actions to prevent his planned visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state. He stated that the incident has prompted him to reconsider his approach to political matters.

Obi, who has consistently engaged in humanitarian efforts across Nigeria, had intended to visit the IDP camps in Benue, continuing his outreach to those affected by violence. However, the planned visit to Benue became embroiled in controversy when Obi’s attempts to reach the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, were unsuccessful. In a statement issued on his handle on April 14, Obi reflected on his experience, noting that his treatment by the state government called for a shift in how he responds to political challenges.

Obi explained that he had planned visits to both Plateau and Benue on April 13 and 14, 2025, respectively, where he intended to meet with the governors and visit IDP camps and nursing schools. While his visit to Plateau proceeded smoothly after coordination with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, his attempts to contact Governor Alia were unsuccessful, despite multiple efforts. Obi was informed by the governor’s ADC that Alia had been in a crucial meeting and would call back, but no contact was made until later, raising questions about the lack of communication.

Upon arrival in Makurdi, Obi was informed by his security team that a press statement from the Benue State Government was issued, effectively blocking his visit. The statement detailed his itinerary, which he had previously shared with the ADC and his security personnel.

In response, Obi emphasized the purpose of his visit: to show support for essential causes such as health, education, and humanitarian aid. He reminded everyone of his long-standing commitment to supporting those in need, recalling his efforts to gain permission from then-President Goodluck Jonathan to visit Haiti after the earthquake, as well as his ongoing philanthropic work in Nigeria.

Obi concluded his statement by reaffirming his dedication to the welfare of citizens, especially those displaced by conflict, and expressed his frustration with the situation in Benue.
