A prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has dismissed the recent alliance efforts by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, claiming that even with the support of infamous insurgents such as Abubakar Shekau and Bello Turji, their coalition would still be unsuccessful in the 2027 general elections.

In a post shared on Facebook, Akindele asserted that leadership in the North, once resumed, should be steered by a statesman capable of representing the interests of all Nigerians. He strongly criticized the credibility and political influence of Atiku and El-Rufai.

“Even if Atiku and El-Rufai align with Shekau and Turji, they will still suffer a crushing defeat in 2027,” Akindele wrote.

He continued, “Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai do not have control over any political party. Is that how a credible coalition is formed? Back in 2015, Tinubu commanded the ACN while Buhari led the CPC—both parties united and drew defectors from other platforms. That was a strategic and effective opposition alliance.”

Akindele added that the political conditions that helped facilitate the Buhari-Tinubu merger in 2015—such as former President Goodluck Jonathan completing Yar’Adua’s term and seeking re-election—do not exist today.

“Unlike Jonathan back then, Tinubu is currently serving his own term. So, in the end, it’s the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) you’ll end up blaming,” he remarked.

Naija News earlier reported that Atiku Abubakar recently announced the formation of a new political coalition, which includes notable political actors such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and other key figures.

The coalition’s stated objective is to challenge and potentially unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Following El-Rufai’s departure from the APC to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the former Kaduna governor cited concerns over the erosion of internal democracy within the ruling party under Tinubu’s leadership.

Additionally, former SDP presidential flagbearer, Adewale Adebayo, confirmed that discussions are ongoing among Atiku, Obi, and the SDP regarding potential party alignments. He emphasized that if these leaders align with the SDP’s core values, the coalition could pose a formidable challenge to Tinubu and the APC in 2027.
