Nigerian singer Timaya has urged citizens to carefully consider their choices at the polls ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that decisions made during elections could have consequences for the country for years.

According to reports, Timaya made the remarks during an interview with Wazobia FM, where he encouraged Nigerians not to allow immediate benefits to influence their political decisions.

The singer said accepting short-term incentives from politicians could result in prolonged hardship, stressing that voters should consider the broader consequences of their choices.

He urged Nigerians to vote for candidates they believe can contribute positively to the development of the country rather than focusing solely on immediate personal gains.

Timaya also questioned the commitment of some political office holders who, according to him, spend significant periods abroad while their families are based outside Nigeria.

He argued that politicians who are largely disconnected from the everyday realities of Nigerians may struggle to fully understand the challenges confronting ordinary citizens.

“Nobody is advising anybody. If what you want to eat today is what you are looking for to put in your pocket, that is your business. It is not just one day; it is another four years of hardship. If you know what is good, you have to vote right,” he said.

Reflecting on his experiences abroad, the singer questioned how some politicians could adequately address Nigeria’s problems while allegedly living outside the country with their families.

Timaya further expressed concern over what he described as selfish interests among some political leaders, arguing that the welfare of millions of Nigerians should take precedence over individual or family interests.

He said, “If there is anybody who will make this country cry again, God should just take that person. Because the cry of the country right now is bigger than just one person.”

The singer added that no politician’s personal or family interest should be placed above the wellbeing of millions of Nigerians, describing the situation in the country as serious.
