Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he initially had little regard or respect for veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy.

Obasanjo made the revelation while featuring on the “Curiosity Made Me Ask” podcast hosted by comedian and content creator Isbae U.

According to the former president, his perception of Charly Boy changed after he visited the home of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa and discovered the level of care the entertainer provided for his father.

Obasanjo said Charly Boy remained devoted to his father until his death and later extended the same care to his mother, whom he described as a humorous woman.

The former president recalled that he regularly visited Charly Boy’s mother and observed the entertainer’s commitment to her wellbeing.

He said his initial impression of Charly Boy began to change after witnessing how the entertainer cared for his father.

“When I first came to know Charly Boy, I had no iota of regard or respect for him. But when I went to visit Joseph Oputa, it was in Charly Boy’s house. I didn’t know it was in Charly Boy’s house,” Obasanjo said.

He added that seeing how Charly Boy cared for his father influenced his opinion of the entertainer.

“I saw how Joseph Oputa was being taken care of, and by whom? Charly Boy. So, I started changing my mind about Charly Boy. Until Joseph Oputa died, Charly Boy took perfect care of him,” he said.

Obasanjo also recalled questioning Charly Boy about his unconventional public persona. According to him, the entertainer explained that his unusual appearance and behaviour were part of his strategy for making money.

The former president further praised Charly Boy’s late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, describing him as one of the Nigerians he respected greatly.

“He has a good father, Justice Oputa. Oh, what a great man. I wish Charly Boy had resembled him,” Obasanjo added.

The remarks provide an account of how Obasanjo’s perception of Charly Boy evolved after witnessing his relationship with and care for his parents.
