Tragedy in Abuja: Ex-Senator Dies After Hospital Reportedly Demands Full Payment First

Former Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora has passed away in Abuja under tragic circumstances after a reported delay in emergency surgery due to financial constraints. The former lawmaker, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, died at Nizamiye Hospital following what sources described as a preventable lapse in critical medical intervention.

According to iReporter Online, the late senator was rushed to the hospital for urgent surgery, but the procedure was allegedly withheld after the medical facility insisted on receiving a full $30,000 deposit before proceeding. Despite an initial payment of $15,000 being made, hospital officials reportedly declined to begin treatment until the remaining balance was paid.

A family member disclosed that although efforts were made to raise the outstanding funds, the delay proved fatal. “They said they would start the surgery once the remaining amount arrived. Unfortunately, by the time it did, it was already too late,” the source lamented.

According to iReporter Online, the incident has sparked public outrage and renewed debate over the ethics of hospitals enforcing strict payment policies in life-threatening situations, especially when dealing with prominent figures or cases of emergency.

Nizamiye Hospital, while confirming its payment policy, reportedly declined to accept responsibility for the outcome. The lack of immediate medical response has drawn widespread criticism, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the prioritization of finance over human life.

According to iReporter Online, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago was among those who tried to mobilize resources for the late senator’s medical bills before his demise. Condolences have also poured in from political leaders, including Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, who praised Kontagora’s gentle political demeanor and consistent advocacy for his constituents.

Senator Kontagora is survived by his wife and children. His burial is scheduled to take place today at the National Mosque in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic rites.
