A fresh political standoff is brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Kano State Chairman, Usaini Isa Mai Riga, has firmly stated that the party’s structure in the state will not be relinquished to former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, the development follows closely on the heels of Kwankwaso’s recent defection to the party, during which he formally obtained his membership card.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Mai Riga emphasized that the current leadership of the party in Kano remains resolute in opposing any move by Kwankwaso to assume control, describing such a development as unacceptable.

He disclosed that prior engagements aimed at reaching a consensus before Kwankwaso’s entry into the party were unsuccessful, despite two separate meetings held to deliberate on possible leadership arrangements.

The chairman maintained that the sacrifices made by existing members in building and sustaining the party would not be disregarded, insisting that all lawful measures would be taken to prevent any takeover of the party structure.

Mai Riga further revealed that the suspension of the planned state congress was based on directives from the party’s national leadership, citing concerns linked to the timing of Kwankwaso’s entry, even as similar congresses proceeded in other states.

He expressed concern that there were indications of moves to hand over the party structure to the former Kano State governor, a situation he said the state leadership would strongly resist in order to protect the rights of party members.

The Kano chairman also noted that Kwankwaso has yet to formally engage with the state leadership of the party since his defection.
