Infantino Fires Back At 2026 World Cup Critics

According to Ireporter Online, Infantino made the remarks in a lengthy statement shared on his personal Instagram page before it was reposted to FIFA’s official account, where he addressed what he described as persistent attacks from critics operating through traditional and social media platforms.

The FIFA president maintained that the global football showpiece was successfully delivered despite the controversies that surrounded the tournament, describing it as the “greatest event on earth” and a celebration that showcased humanity at its finest.

Infantino insisted the competition was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, claiming the tournament recorded complete safety and security while bringing together millions of people in an atmosphere of unity, excitement and happiness.

He also defended FIFA’s handling of Iran’s participation in the tournament despite diplomatic tensions involving one of the host nations, the United States. According to him, FIFA worked extensively behind the scenes to ensure Iran’s participation proceeded without conflict.

His comments, however, contrast with earlier complaints by Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, who described his team as the most disadvantaged side at the competition after experiencing visa delays, travel restrictions and logistical challenges throughout the tournament.

Reports also indicated that supporters from countries including Haiti, Senegal and Ivory Coast encountered travel difficulties due to immigration restrictions, while Somali referee Omar Artan was reportedly denied entry into the United States despite possessing valid travel documents.

Responding to those concerns, Infantino argued that attention should instead be focused on the millions of supporters who successfully travelled to attend the competition, insisting football continued to demonstrate its ability to unite people across the world.

The FIFA chief also rejected concerns about security during the tournament, maintaining that the event remained peaceful despite investigations into post-match clashes after the World Cup final, allegations of racist abuse directed at online personality IShowSpeed and arrests recorded at some match venues.

Infantino further defended FIFA’s controversial decision to lift the one-match suspension imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun before the Round of 16 following intervention by US President Donald Trump.

The decision attracted criticism from UEFA, which questioned the move and described it as unprecedented, while Norway’s football federation reportedly considered referring the matter to FIFA’s ethics committee.

Rejecting allegations of political interference, Infantino argued that similar decisions are common in several major football competitions around the world and questioned why countries that routinely adopt such practices were among FIFA’s strongest critics.

He also noted that the International Olympic Committee had declined to investigate allegations concerning FIFA’s political neutrality after determining that a complaint submitted by human rights campaign group FairSquare did not fall within its ethics commission’s jurisdiction.

Concluding his statement, Infantino urged critics to embrace football’s ability to inspire unity and shared human experiences rather than focus solely on controversy.

He said many people had become so consumed by criticism that they overlooked the emotional moments, celebrations and togetherness the tournament created, adding that the world needs greater love, tolerance and unity instead of division.
