Super Falcons Begin WAFCON Title Hunt Against Malawi

According to Ireporter Online, the 10-time African champions will face WAFCON debutants Malawi in their Group C opener at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on July 28, as they begin their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title.

Coach Justin Madugu said the team’s main objective is to win every match they play, adding that the Super Falcons are fully prepared for the challenge ahead.

He noted that Nigeria would approach each fixture with focus and determination while aiming to secure maximum points throughout the tournament.

The Super Falcons head into the competition in strong form, having won eight of their last nine matches across all competitions. Their final warm-up game before the tournament ended in a 2-1 victory over Tanzania, with Ajibade and Esther Okoronkwo getting on the scoresheet.

Nigeria are the defending champions after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in a dramatic final in the previous edition of the competition.

Meanwhile, Malawi will be making their first-ever appearance at the WAFCON tournament. Although the debutants have struggled in recent matches, they showed their competitiveness during qualification by securing positive results against stronger opponents, including Zambia.

The Super Falcons are expected to miss defender Ashleigh Plumptre due to injury, but Madugu still has several quality options available, with Ajibade and Okoronkwo expected to lead Nigeria’s attacking threat.

Ahead of the tournament, the team faced a brief setback after Okoronkwo revealed that money was stolen from her wallet at the team’s hotel in Casablanca, with some teammates reportedly affected.

The incident was followed by offensive reactions on social media, but the forward insisted that the controversy would not distract the team from their goal of defending the African title.

Captain Ajibade also stated that the squad remains united and focused, adding that the players understand the importance of starting the tournament on a positive note.

She acknowledged Malawi’s progress in women’s football and warned that Nigeria would not underestimate their opponents despite being favourites.

According to Ajibade, securing three points is the most important objective, regardless of the style of play, tactics or performance level.

She also called on Nigerian fans to continue supporting the team throughout the tournament, stressing that their encouragement has always played an important role in the success of the Super Falcons.

After their opening match against Malawi, Nigeria will continue their Group C campaign with fixtures against Zambia and Egypt as they seek another WAFCON triumph.
