Obasanjo Opens Up: “I Won’t Forget What IGP Disu Did To Me During House Arrest

According to Ireporter Online, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his role during the period he was placed under house arrest in 1995 under the military regime of late General Sani Abacha.

Speaking in an interview with News Central, Obasanjo reflected on the difficult circumstances surrounding his detention, describing it as one of the most challenging phases of his life. He noted that despite the restrictions placed on him at the time, several individuals contributed in various ways to his safety and well-being.

The former president specifically acknowledged the current police chief among those he believes played a significant role in ensuring his survival during the ordeal. He stated that the support he received during that period has remained unforgettable and deserving of public appreciation.

Obasanjo was quoted as saying, “Current IGP, I have to in a special way acknowledge you because maybe the reason I am alive today is because you are one of those who kept me alive when I was under house arrest.”

Beyond recounting his personal experience, Obasanjo also commented on Nigeria’s security challenges, reiterating his call for the establishment of state police. He argued that decentralised policing would enable quicker responses to security threats and improve local intelligence gathering.

He maintained that adopting state policing could help address insecurity more effectively, stressing the need for practical and urgent reforms in the nation’s security architecture.
