Emir Sanusi Shares Emotional Memories of Murtala Mohammed’s Assassination
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has shared personal memories of the day Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed, was assassinated in 1976.
During a recent televised interview, Sanusi revealed that he was a student at King’s College, Lagos, when the tragic event occurred. Murtala Mohammed, who served as Nigeria’s fourth military Head of State, was killed on February 13, 1976, in Lagos by coup plotters led by Lt. Col. Bukar Suka Dimka.
Reflecting on the late leader’s legacy nearly five decades after his death, Sanusi paid heartfelt tribute to Murtala, describing him as both firm in leadership and warm in personality. The Emir recounted a close familial bond, noting that Murtala Mohammed was his uncle and legal guardian during his school years in Lagos.
Sanusi detailed how he spent weekends, midterms, and holidays in Murtala’s home, sharing time with his children and becoming an integral part of the family’s life. He portrayed Murtala as a humorous and gentle man, whose public image as a strong and tough leader contrasted with the warmth and kindness he displayed in private.
The traditional ruler’s recollection offered a rare personal glimpse into the life of the late Nigerian leader, who remains a symbol of national pride and strong leadership.
