Pensioners React To Tinubu’s N25,000 Wage Award
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has expressed its appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving a N25,000 wage award as a palliative measure for federal pensioners in the country.
Godwin Abumisi, the National President of NUP, conveyed this commendation during an address marking the 2023 Pensioners and Older Persons Day held on Thursday in Abuja. The event’s theme was “Subsidy Removal and its Negative Effects on the Lives of the Pensioners/Older Persons.”
Abumisi acknowledged the Federal Government’s commitment to pensioners’ welfare by approving N25,000 as a wage award for vulnerable pensioners. He urged the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, entrusted with the payment, to swiftly disburse the funds to alleviate the hardships faced by pensioners and older individuals.
Furthermore, he appealed to the government to extend the payment of the wage award from three to six months, aligning it with the duration provided to regular workers. Abumisi emphasized the importance of government agencies handling the disbursement, emphasizing the need for accurate database records to ensure seamless access and delivery to all pensioners.
Abumisi highlighted the pressing challenges faced by NUP members, including the non-harmonization of pensions, omission of the 2015 pension review, non-payment of arrears related to pension increments, and the consequential adjustment of 2007, 2010, and 2019.
He also drew attention to the delayed release of timely monthly accrued rights to contributory pensioners, causing them considerable hardship. The total accumulated accrued rights amount to approximately N140 billion.
Abumisi called on the Federal Government for timely intervention to prevent untimely deaths among this category of pensioners. He further urged the president to expedite action on the payment of the outstanding balance of N33 billion to Nigeria Airways workers.
Abumisi concluded by noting that the event’s theme was highly relevant, given the prevailing economic challenges resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies, among other factors.
