How Suspected Cultists Killed UNIBEN Final Year Student

In a recent escalation of conflict between rival cult groups within the University of Benin, a fifth-year student was tragically shot and killed on campus. Additionally, three other students sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack and were promptly rushed to the hospital for treatment.

According to a Student Union representative, the incident occurred on Friday evening as students were making their way back to their hostels.

The assailants, affiliated with a cult group, targeted the Anatomy Department near the institution’s rear gate.

The victim lost his life after completing an examination, having been shot at close range within his vehicle. Three others were also wounded as they attempted to flee from the attackers.

The occurrence led to widespread panic among both students and staff on campus, with everyone seeking refuge.

Reports indicate that prior to this incident, a violent clash between rival groups erupted in the Ekiadolor area, a community adjacent to the school, just days earlier. This unrest subsequently spilled over into the Ugbowo campus of the institution.

A viral video capturing the aftermath of the incident shows a red car bearing bullet holes. The deceased was seen being carefully removed from the vehicle and placed in the back of a pickup van for transportation.

Attempts to obtain a statement from the school’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to two messages sent via WhatsApp.

Upon contact, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, stated that he had not yet been informed of the incident, saying, “I am yet to be briefed of such an incident. When I get the brief, I will let you know, but for now no information.”

It’s worth noting that a few months ago, a final-year student residing in the Hall 3 hostel of the University of Benin fell victim to a fatal shooting by unidentified gunmen within his room.
