The statement from his family described Ackland as one of Britain’s most talented and beloved actors, recognizing his notable contributions to the film industry. Ackland’s notable roles included a corrupt South African diplomat in “Lethal Weapon 2,” a vengeful mafia don in “The Sicilian,” and a buttoned-up aristocratic Englishman facing murder accusations in Kenya in “White Mischief.”

Despite often portraying antagonists, Ackland, standing at 6ft 1in (1.85 meters) with a rich and versatile voice, embraced the complexity of his roles. He expressed his preference for portraying evil, stating that while subtlety in acting was achievable, portraying goodness was more challenging.

Ackland’s early struggles as a jobbing actor, spanning the mid-1940s, prompted him and his wife to move to Malawi and later South Africa. Returning to the UK in 1957, he joined London’s Old Vic theatre, laying the foundation for a prolific career encompassing television, film, stage plays, and musicals.

The actor, born on February 29, 1928, in North Kensington, West London, emphasized research as a crucial element in his acting approach, contributing to his credibility on screen. His personal experiences, including the loss of his son Paul to an overdose and the devastation caused by a house fire, influenced his performances.

Ackland’s retirement in 2014 marked the conclusion of a distinguished career, allowing him to devote time to his extensive family.
