President Shouldn’t Be Petroleum Minister – Sanusi Seeks NNPC Audit

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has advocated for a thorough audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), revealing that making such a call was a contributing factor to losing his position at the apex bank.

Speaking at The Bank Directors Summit held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Sanusi emphasized his belief that the President should not serve as the Minister of Petroleum.

He expressed the view that both the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) should persist until banks collectively settle their outstanding obligations to the system.

Sanusi emphasized the need for the banking sector to rebuild trust with the public, asserting that there is no requirement to amend the CBN Act to ensure the central bank remains free from political influence.

In August, President Bola Tinubu divided the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, appointing Ekperipe Ekpo as Minister of State for Gas Resources and Heineken Lokpobiri as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, while retaining the substantive position of Minister of Petroleum Resources himself.
