BREAKING: ‘Many’ Rivers Commissioners Resign (FULL LIST)

The political crisis in Rivers State intensified on Thursday with the resignation of six commissioners who were aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike.

These commissioners stepped down from their roles in the cabinet of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The crisis was further evident as the two factions of the divided state House of Assembly conducted separate sittings on the same day.

The commissioners who resigned include Professor Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; Dr. Des George-Kelly, Commissioner for Works; Emeka Woke, Commissioner for Special Duties; Mrs. Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation; Isaac Kamalu, Commissioner for Finance; and Professor Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Education.

Among these resigning commissioners, five had previously served under Governor Wike’s administration in similar capacities, while Woke had been Wike’s Chief of Staff for eight years.

George-Kelly stated that he resigned due to his conscience, while Mrs. Aguma cited other commitments. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Adangor, based his resignation on personal principles. Commissioners Woke and Kamalu asked reporters to await their formal resignation letters for details.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education submitted his resignation letter dated December 14, 2023, addressed to the Governor through the Secretary to the State Government., said, “I hereby resign my appointment as the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Rivers State for personal reasons.

“I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity given to me to serve in your administration and wish you the best as you carry on with the governance of the state.”

Reports suggest that an additional six commissioners have purportedly submitted their resignations, although there is currently no official confirmation regarding this claim.
