BREAKING: Rivers Lawmakers Loyal To Wike Convenes Sitting Day After Complex Demolition (WHAT HAPPENED DURING SITTING)

In a surprising turn of events amid the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly convened for a sitting on Thursday, just 24 hours after Governor Siminalayi Fubara led the demolition of the Assembly Complex on Moscow Road.

Despite a restraining court order, the Amaewhule group held a plenary session at the auditorium of the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road.

This gathering followed the previous day’s declaration by the five-man group led by Edison Ehie, which declared vacant the seats of 27 lawmakers in the Amaewhule group for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During Thursday’s plenary, the Amaewhule group lawmakers condemned the demolition of the Assembly Complex by the state government. Ofiks Kagbang, the lawmaker representing Andoni constituency, moved a motion of urgent public importance condemning the demolition, which was unanimously adopted by the House.

Furthermore, Major Jack presented the report on the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Bill, which, if passed into law, aims to curtail the governor’s authority to dissolve Local Government Executives. The Speaker of the group emphasized that the legislative sittings would, for the time being, take place in the auditorium at the Assembly Quarters.

With a total of 26 lawmakers in attendance, the Amaewhule group’s decision to use the auditorium marked a symbolic departure from the demolished Assembly Complex. On Wednesday, Governor Fubara had presented the state’s 2024 budget to the Ehie group at the Government House.

The leadership crisis between Ehie and Amaewhule, currently in court, stems from their allegiance to different political figures. While Ehie and his faction are loyalists of Governor Fubara, Amaewhule and his group are perceived to be loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The rupture in the previously described ‘father-son relationship’ between Wike and Fubara began in October when the Amaewhule group initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
