During a livestreamed parliamentary speech on Tuesday, a Turkish lawmaker, Hasan Bitmez, collapsed in parliament, experiencing a heart attack.

The 53-year-old member of the conservative Felicity Party had been delivering an address at the General Assembly of the Turkish parliament, wherein he criticized Israel and asserted that it would not be able to “escape the wrath of Allah ending it by saying that “we can perhaps hide from our conscience but not from history,” and by addressing the Jewish state: “You will not escape the wrath of Allah.”

He then said, “I salute you all,” immediately before collapsing to the ground at the podium, with his head hitting the floor.

Fellow members of the assembly rushed to his side.

According to Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, Bitmez was hospitalized and his condition was “extremely critical and serious.”

Turkey had initially sought to improve relations with Israel in the months leading up to the October 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel. However, following the conflict, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reversed his stance and resumed vehement criticisms of Israel, echoing patterns from his earlier years in power.

Erdogan has recently reiterated his view that Hamas is not a terrorist group and insisted on its involvement in the reconstruction of Gaza after the conflict. Despite Western support for Israel’s efforts to eliminate Hamas, Erdogan’s statements reflect a departure from the warming trend seen prior to the October events.

In response to warnings from Erdogan, who threatened severe consequences if Israel targeted Hamas members in Turkey, tensions escalated. This occurred after revelations of the head of the Shin Bet security agency expressing Israel’s determination to eliminate Hamas leaders globally, including in locations like Lebanon, Turkey, and Qatar.

In early November, Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations over the Gaza conflict, clarifying that it did not intend to sever diplomatic ties completely. It is noteworthy that the two nations had only fully restored diplomatic relations in August 2022 after years of strained relations.
