Lai, labeled a threat to peace by China, secured an unprecedented third consecutive term for Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), positioning himself as a defender of the island’s democratic values.

Chinese official Chen stated that the election results reveal the DPP’s failure to represent mainstream public opinion on the island, emphasizing that it won’t alter the landscape or development trend of cross-Strait relations.

Beijing maintains a consistent stance on national reunification, firmly opposing separatist activities related to “Taiwan independence” and foreign interference.

The closely-watched election, observed by Beijing and Washington, took place amid the strategic competition for influence in the region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously declared the “inevitability” of Taiwan’s unification with China in a New Year’s address. In the lead-up to the vote, Beijing cautioned that Lai posed a severe danger and could threaten peace by pursuing the “evil path” of independence.
