He attributed the Super Eagles’ contention for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy to a robust sense of unity within the squad.

Troost-Ekong also highlighted the team’s success to the determination of its young and talented players to prove themselves on the international stage.

As the oldest player in Jose Peseiro’s squad at the ongoing tournament, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the presence of nine Super Eagles players representing top five European League clubs.

“I believe all of us are now playing in reputable teams across various leagues, with one or two in better teams than others. Yet, everyone is youthful and motivated to demonstrate their capabilities, which contributes to our strength as a team,” he explained during an interview with Hot Sports.

He continued, “Once we’re together in camp, nobody concerns themselves with their club affiliations. There’s a genuine sense of brotherhood among us, which positively impacts our performance on the field.”

Troost-Ekong dismissed the notion of having superstars in the team, suggesting that previous Nigerian generations relied heavily on players from prominent clubs.

“While past generations may have benefited from having many players in top teams, it also posed challenges as it involved managing various agendas and mentalities,” he concluded.
