Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, laid bare the stark reality in an interview on Arise Television, confronting perceptions of Nigeria’s economic status head-on.
Highlighting the disparity between Nigeria’s per capita income and that of other African nations, Onanuga emphasized the harsh truth of the country’s economic plight. “Nigeria is a very, very poor country, to be honest,” he admitted, challenging prevailing notions of national wealth.
Despite ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, Onanuga stressed the need for a realistic assessment of Nigeria’s financial standing. The administration remains cautiously optimistic, hopeful that such measures will alleviate pressure on the nation’s finances.
Addressing concerns over delayed salaries and allegations of unpaid emoluments, Onanuga refuted claims of outstanding debts to federal workers under the Tinubu-led government. Citing challenges with salary disbursement platforms, he assured that all federal workers have been duly compensated, debunking rumors of lingering financial obligations.
As Nigeria confronts the sobering reality of its economic challenges, the Presidency’s candid admission serves as a rallying cry for transparency and concerted efforts to address underlying issues. With the veil lifted on Nigeria’s economic landscape, the path forward demands pragmatic solutions and a renewed commitment to fostering sustainable growth and prosperity for all citizens.
