This collaborative initiative aims to stabilize prices and ensure accessibility of this crucial construction material for all sectors of the economy.

Following a series of deliberations between government officials and representatives from major cement manufacturing companies, a consensus was reached on setting the price range for a 50kg bag of cement at between N7,000 and N8,000. This agreement reflects a concerted effort to mitigate the adverse effects of the recent price hikes witnessed in the market.

The discussions, held behind closed doors at the Ministry of Works headquarters in Abuja, emphasized the need for immediate action to alleviate the burden placed on consumers by the sudden escalation in cement prices. Both parties acknowledged the detrimental impact of these price fluctuations on various sectors, including construction, infrastructure development, and housing projects.

While the agreed-upon price range provides a semblance of stability, it is contingent upon the government fulfilling promised interventions to address underlying challenges affecting the industry. Factors such as foreign exchange volatility, deteriorating road infrastructure, and rampant smuggling have contributed to the recent price hikes, and concerted efforts are required to tackle these issues effectively.

In light of the agreement, President Bola Tinubu directed the Ministers of Works and Trade and Investment to oversee the implementation of measures aimed at resolving the crisis. The collaborative approach between the government and the cement industry underscores a commitment to finding sustainable solutions that promote economic growth and development.

As part of the agreement, a review of the pricing arrangement will be conducted in 30 days to assess its effectiveness and address any emerging challenges. This proactive measure demonstrates a commitment to ongoing dialogue and cooperation between stakeholders to ensure the stability of the cement market and support the nation’s infrastructure development agenda.
