Imo Undergraduates Protest Against High Tuition, Extortion, And Intimidation

In a unified demand, the students called upon both the Federal and State Governments to halt the recurrent increments in tuition fees and put an end to unjustified extortion practices through compulsory handouts and textbooks.

They emphasized the urgent need for the government to prioritize the creation of conducive learning environments, equipped with essential amenities like medical facilities, electricity, and boreholes, to ensure an enhanced standard of education and uphold moral values.

The demonstrators, comprising students from institutions such as the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University Owerri (IMSU), Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, and Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, UAES, Umuagwo, Ohaji, also lamented the burdensome expenses associated with student accommodation and the prevailing economic hardship in Imo State.

They attributed these challenges to the government’s flawed economic policies, inadequate infrastructure, and widespread unemployment.

In a bid to alleviate the suffering, hunger, and poverty faced by students, the protesters urged the government to formulate and implement policies geared towards the welfare and well-being of the populace.

Valentine Nzubechi, Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who addressed the demonstrators, provided assurance that both the Federal and State governments would heed their demands and take necessary actions to improve the quality of education and address their concerns.
