Security Analyst Ghanaians Allegedly Joining Russian Army Not Cause For Alarm

Retired Colonel Festus Aboagye, a former military officer and security analyst, has sought to allay public concerns following the circulation of a viral video purportedly depicting Ghanaians enlisting in the Russian army amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Despite apprehensions regarding security implications, Aboagye cautioned against automatically associating anything Russian with peril. Speaking in an interview with Citi News, he remarked, “We must be cautious in our discourse not to perpetuate an East-West dichotomy, where Western affiliations are deemed favorable while Eastern associations are viewed negatively. Just because Ghanaian citizens may join the Russian army or similar groups like Wagner, doesn’t inherently denote a crisis. Conversely, when Ghanaians enlist in the US army, it’s not perceived as problematic. We need to exercise prudence in this regard.” He further highlighted that individuals may seek such opportunities for reasons ranging from economic necessity to a desire for adventure.

“They may be individuals in search of excitement, and if they find that the Ghana Army or other local options don’t fulfill that need, they may opt to explore opportunities with the Russian Army or similar entities like Wagner. It’s ultimately a matter of personal motivation,” he concluded.
