The disclosure came during a Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation Media Chat held in Asaba.

Concurrently, the Olota community in Delta State reported aggressive military operations during a raid aimed at recovering stolen arms and apprehending the perpetrators responsible for the soldiers’ deaths.

Reports from the community indicate that Joseph Willie, a resident, succumbed to injuries inflicted during the raid, described as a case of military brutality. Additionally, Reuben Awanriarere sustained eardrum damage, while Okwagbe Ebirie was left unable to walk due to severe beatings.

These incidents and subsequent military operations have escalated tensions in the region, with ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to identify and prosecute those responsible for the deaths of 17 military personnel.

Maj. Gen. Ugbo stated, “Arrests will continue to be made as this matter remains under investigation. We have recovered some of our equipment, arms, and ammunition, but the search is ongoing.”

Regarding media restrictions imposed on Okuama community, he emphasized, “It remains a crime scene under investigation, and interference with ongoing inquiries is inappropriate.”

Regarding the safety of detained Ovie of Ewu Kingdom, HRM Clement Ikolo, Maj. Gen. Ugbo assured, “The traditional ruler is secure and still under investigation. As the investigation unfolds, more facts will emerge, and new individuals may be called for questioning.”

Maj. Gen. Ugbo clarified the focus on Okuama compared to other areas of previous attacks, stating, “In other instances, soldiers were killed in action by adversaries, not within a community. We pursue terrorists in their hideouts, but this incident involves a community.”

Regarding the search at the country home residence of Niger Delta leader Edwin Clark, Maj. Gen. Ugbo reiterated the ongoing investigation, urging patience for comprehensive findings.

He concluded, “The investigation continues, and the community is assisting in identifying and arresting perpetrators. Let us exercise patience as the truth emerges with time.”

Meanwhile, the Olota community has appealed for intervention following reported cases of military brutality, emphasizing their distance from the Okuama incident and the need for peace.
