In an interview with Vanguard, Edjekota recounted the terrifying events of the attack. She described how many villagers were caught unawares as they went about their daily activities. Men had gone to the farms, leaving behind women and children in the community.

According to Edjekota, the attackers, dressed in military uniforms, arrived at the community, causing fear and confusion among the residents. Despite efforts to resist and plead for mercy, the situation quickly escalated, and gunfire erupted, claiming many lives.

As chaos ensued, more boats arrived from the Bomadi axis of the river, intensifying the assault on the people at the jetty, including the army. Fearing for their lives, Edjekota and others fled into the bush to seek refuge, leaving behind their homes and loved ones.

Tragically, Edjekota’s family members, including her children and husband, were missing, adding to the anguish of the displaced villagers. Living in the bush, they struggled to survive, facing sickness, hunger, and exposure to the elements.

Edjekota pleaded for help from the government and appealed for the soldiers to leave their community, as their presence only added to their suffering. She emphasized that it was not the villagers who attacked the soldiers but unknown assailants who came in boats from the Bomadi side.

The situation remains dire for the displaced residents of Okuama, who yearn to return home and rebuild their lives away from the horrors of violence and displacement.
