Canada’s Unemployment Rate Rises To 6.1% Amid Economic Challenges

In March, Canada witnessed a notable uptick in its unemployment rate, which surged to 6.1%, reflecting challenges faced by the economy amidst high-interest rates. While certain sectors experienced declines, the healthcare and social assistance fields saw job additions. Additionally, there was a noteworthy uptick in the average hourly wage, which rose by 5.1% in March compared to the same period in 2023.

However, despite these fluctuations in employment statistics, the employment rate, which denotes the segment of the population aged 15 and over who are employed, continued its downward trend for the sixth consecutive month. It now stands at 61.4%, a trend attributed to a population boom.

The rise in unemployment underscores the impact of high borrowing costs on businesses and the persistently strong growth in the country’s labor supply. Compared to the previous year, the unemployment rate has escalated by one percentage point, highlighting ongoing economic challenges faced by Canada.
