Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health, revealed this during a monitoring and inspection visit to Warri, accompanied by ministry officials and security personnel.

The sealed facilities encompassed a range of healthcare services, including hospitals, clinics, maternity homes, laboratories, eye clinics, and traditional birth attendant homes.

Dr. Onojaeme clarified that these premises either lacked proper registration to operate as private healthcare facilities or had failed to fulfill obligations such as annual renewal fees. Additionally, some facilities were found to be employing and training auxiliary nurses, contravening regulations.

Representing the Commissioner, Dr. Mathew Anibor, Deputy Director of Medical Services and Training, emphasized that private healthcare facilities must be registered with the ministry, as stipulated by the Private Healthcare Facilities Law enacted in May 2019.

He emphasized the continuation of such enforcement actions, with plans for further unscheduled visits to assess the compliance status of other registered facilities, especially regarding annual fee renewals.

Dr. Onojaeme urged healthcare professionals to adhere to registration requirements and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities in healthcare facilities.

Penalties for violations include imprisonment ranging from six months to one year or fines up to N5 million, underscoring the seriousness of regulatory compliance in the healthcare sector.
