The announcement was made during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, conveyed the declaration, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to modernizing and professionalizing the police force.
President Tinubu underscored the imperative of instigating a profound transformation in the institutional mindset and ethos of police personnel. This overhaul, he noted, forms a cornerstone of ongoing reforms geared towards revitalizing the force and fostering accountability.
Since assuming office in 2023, the administration has embarked on a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at rejuvenating the nation’s law enforcement apparatus. Integral to this initiative is the prioritization of training and capacity-building programs, essential for equipping officers with the requisite skills to effectively discharge their duties in the contemporary landscape of policing.
In addition to designating the first week of April as Police Week, President Tinubu decreed April 7th as National Police Day in Nigeria, a symbolic gesture intended to honor the dedication and sacrifice of police officers nationwide.
Addressing the gathering, President Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of law enforcement in safeguarding national security and preserving societal harmony. He commended the unwavering commitment and valor demonstrated by police personnel, acknowledging their role as custodians of peace and guardians of the nation’s welfare.
Amidst the prevailing challenges confronting the nation’s security architecture, President Tinubu lauded the resilience and fortitude of citizens, attributing their endurance to the steadfast dedication of the police force.
The president concluded by reaffirming the government’s unwavering support for the police and reiterated its commitment to implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing law enforcement capabilities and restoring public trust in the institution.
