The removal exercise commenced on Monday, April 15, with operatives from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance (DEC) unit leading the demolition efforts, supported by security personnel from the Task Force on Special Offences and other relevant agencies.
Prior to the demolition, the ministry engaged in consultative stakeholder meetings, including sessions with members of the legislative Assembly. During these discussions, held as early as December 21, 2023, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab and House of Assembly representative Hon Sanni Okanlawon emphasized the necessity of adhering to regulations regarding structures built on drainage right of way.
At these meetings, property owners were unable to provide evidence of valid titles for the structures encroaching on the drainage channels. Consequently, Wahab reiterated that in the absence of legitimate titles, all affected structures would need to be removed.
The Commissioner further noted that despite the issuance of contravention notices, some property owners persisted in their construction activities, displaying a disregard for the law.
Wahab advised property owners to voluntarily dismantle the encroaching structures and fences before government officials intervene with demolition equipment. This proactive measure aims to mitigate any further legal or financial repercussions for the affected individuals.
