The activity commenced on Sunday and persisted through Monday, resulting in the destruction of machine houses, stores, and sand beaches utilized by sand miners and traders in the vicinity.

The demolition led to the destruction of multiple equipment houses, shops, and business premises, following closely on the heels of the demolition of over 2,300 shops in the same area by the council a month before.

According to The Punch correspondent, the operation has resulted in the displacement of at least 4,000 sand miners and traders who were conducting business in the area.

Supervising the demolition was the Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Emeka Orji, accompanied by more than 15 operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Service.

During the exercise, Orji reiterated the state government’s commitment to reclaiming the land from its current occupants.

Orji said, “The state government is determined to reclaim the land from its present occupiers and clear the area of illegal structures defacing the environment. The affected victims have been warned to vacate the place, but they did not take the warning seriously.”

Affected sand miners and traders voiced their frustration, stating that the exercise had resulted in them losing their livelihoods and residences.
