Benue State Government Dismantles 40 Illegal Structures And Shanties
On May 4, 2024, Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration in Benue State took decisive action by demolishing 40 unauthorized shanties and structures scattered across various areas in the state capital, Makurdi. Spearheaded by Tarnongo Mede, the General Manager of the Benue State Urban Development Board (UDB), the demolition aimed to reclaim urban spaces and restore orderliness……READ ALSO Benue State Government Plans Independent Power Supply Plant To Boost Electricity Generation
Mede emphasized that the proliferation of shanties necessitated the government’s intervention to uphold urban planning standards. Acting on Governor Alia’s directive to rejuvenate the city, the UDB embarked on this initial phase to clear obstructed roads and ensure compliance with development regulations.
“In this initial phase, we’ve dismantled over 40 illegal structures and liberated blocked thoroughfares. Our efforts will persist, targeting areas where developers impede public access, encompassing the entirety of Makurdi,” Mede stated.
Furthermore, Mede highlighted plans to demolish approximately 800 houses encroaching upon waterways, particularly in the Kanshio Layout area, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and prevent flooding incidents.
In a separate legal development, the trial of former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, in a ₦3.1 billion money laundering case, has been adjourned by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja until May 8, 2024. The case alleges Suswam’s involvement in bribing a former Federal High Court Judge to sway trial verdicts in his favor, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the state.
