During a media briefing organized by the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sowunmi emphasized the imperative of restructuring the PDP’s internal mechanisms to enhance its capacity and efficiency, especially in light of recent electoral setbacks in Ogun State.

The PDP stalwart highlighted the necessity of revisiting the party’s foundational values and ideology to rejuvenate its stature and electoral prospects. He underscored the PDP’s role as a robust opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), offering viable policy alternatives to the current administration.

Additionally, Sowunmi announced his candidacy for the National Chairmanship position of the PDP, signaling his commitment to contributing to the party’s revitalization.

With the suspension of the party’s former National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, there has been agitation within the North-Central caucus for the zone to exercise its constitutional right to complete its four-year tenure, which concludes in October 2025.
