The uproar follows Sowunmi’s recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, and his subsequent scolding of supporters of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Sowunmi, who had attracted backlash for sharing photos of his visit to Buhari, defended his actions, revealing that one of the primary reasons for the visit was to discuss the possibility of a Nigerian president from the South-East. Expressing concern over the agitation and anger among South Easterners about their desire for the presidency, Sowunmi aimed to engage in a broader discussion on the topic.

In an interview with Channels TV on Politics Today, Sowunmi expressed disappointment at the reception from Obi’s supporters, labeling them “Obidients.” He asserted that his intention was to address the South-East presidency issue and collaborate on finding a way forward. However, the response he received, laden with anger and abuses, left him perplexed.

The situation has injected an unexpected tribalistic element into the political discourse, prompting Sowunmi to reconsider his approach in the face of a polarized political landscape.
